Start at Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden

The Amelia Lagoon hike starts at the Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden (Roça Bom Sucesso), at an altitude of 1,100 meters. From here, a certified guide leads you directly into the dense rainforest. As a result, you quickly feel surrounded by one of the island’s richest ecosystems.

Hiking Through Endemic Flora and Fauna

Along the trail, you may hear the calls of endemic bird species. In addition, you will discover a wide variety of native plants, including impressive giant white begonias. Throughout the hike, your guide explains the importance of this unique biodiversity.

Amelia Lagoon: A Volcanic Crater Landscape

Eventually, you reach Amelia Lagoon, located inside an ancient volcanic crater. Here, the ground feels soft and spongy, covered in deep green vegetation. Moreover, mysterious fungi grow throughout the area, adding to the lagoon’s unusual atmosphere.

Legend of Princess Amelia

During the hike, your guide shares the legend of Princess Amelia, after whom the lagoon takes its name. This story adds cultural depth and helps you better understand the significance of the site.

Trail Conditions and Practical Advice

The trail includes ascents and descents and can become muddy and slippery, especially after rain. For this reason, your guide provides a walking stick when necessary. Since rain often falls in the early afternoon, we recommend starting the hike in the morning.

Additionally, wear hiking shoes or boots for better grip. Bring a light raincoat, and finally, leave dry clothes in your vehicle in case you get wet.
