Volcano Crater in the Obô National Park: The Heart of São Tomé

Experience the natural wonders of São Tomé with a guided hike to Amelia Lagoon, a hidden gem in Obô National Park.

Begin your adventure at the botanical garden (Roça Bom Sucesso), where your certified guide will lead you on a hike to Amelia Lagoon, a volcano crater enveloped in lush vegetation at the core of Obô National Park. Marvel at the stunning beauty of São Tomé's nature, featuring unique flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the island.

Along the trail, you may hear the calls of endemic birds and discover the giant orchids that thrive in this rich ecosystem. When you reach the lagoon, you'll be greeted by an incredible green landscape with spongy soil, the heart of São Tomé's volcanic crater, filled with mysterious fungi whose depths remain unknown.

Be sure to ask your guide about the enchanting legend of Princess Amelia, for whom the lagoon is named. Note that the path can be slippery, so ensure your guide provides you with a walking stick for safety.

Note that it often rains in the early afternoon, so we recommend starting this activity in the morning. Since the hike involves ascending and descending, and the trail can be muddy and slippery, we advise bringing hiking shoes or boots. Also, bring a light raincoat, and don't forget to leave extra dry clothes in your car in case you get soaked!
