A Day in São Tomé: Exploring Coffee Culture and Colonial History
Your journey starts at Roça Bom Sucesso, about a 30-minute drive from the capital. Here, you can take a leisurely walk through a coffee plantation, observing the coffee trees, flowers, and fruits, depending on the season. The picturesque scenery and the rich aroma of coffee will set the perfect tone for your adventure.
If you like, you may take a detour to see the famous St. Nicholas Waterfall. This optional stop offers a breathtaking view of cascading waters amidst lush greenery.
Next, you will visit Roça Monte Café, the largest coffee plantation in São Tomé. Here, you will discover the intricate organization and operations that make this plantation so significant.
As you explore, you´ll go inside the colonial dryer building and see the Indiana Jones´style wooden train. These historic elements add a touch of adventure and nostalgia to your visit, allowing you to step back in time and imagine the plantation's past.
Then, indulge in a semi-gastronomic lunch at Efraim Restaurant, located within the Efraim GuestHouse.
While waiting for the lunch to be served, you may visit the organic production center of the guest house, and learn about the different steps in coffee production making.
After lunch, you will visit the Museum of Coffee. Here, you will learn about the colonial history of São Tomé and the development of its coffee industry. The museum provides a detailed look at the processes and challenges of coffee production, offering a comprehensive understanding of the island's coffee heritage.
Before heading back to your hotel, make sure to taste some of the organic coffee. This final treat will leave you with a lasting impression of São Tomé's rich coffee culture and the unique flavors that make it special. Enjoy the robust and aromatic coffee, and take a moment to reflect on the day's experiences.
