East Coast São Tomé
Discover Stunning Landscapes, Colonial Heritage, Paradise Beaches, and Unique Natural Wonders
The East Coast São Tomé route offers a full-day journey filled with dramatic coastal scenery, cultural encounters, and fascinating historical sites. This experience is ideal for travelers seeking both natural beauty and insight into the island’s heritage.
Start in Santana Village
Begin your day in the vibrant village of Santana, a well-known meeting point for surfers and skaters. Take in the relaxed island atmosphere, watch the action on the waves, and enjoy the youthful, energetic vibe.
Visit F.A.C.A. Cultural Center
From there, visit the F.A.C.A. Cultural and Recycling Center, a meaningful initiative focused on community development and environmental sustainability. Here, you can learn about local recycling practices and, depending on the day, participate in workshops or meet some of the artists and educators involved.
Historic Hospital of Água Izé
Continue toward the historic Hospital of Água Izé, one of the most significant colonial structures on the island. Walking through its grounds provides a poignant look into São Tomé’s medical past and colonial-era architecture.
Mouth of Hell Coastal View
Your journey then leads to the dramatic coastal viewpoint known as the Mouth of Hell, where powerful waves crash into a natural rock formation, creating a spectacular display of raw ocean energy. It is an unforgettable moment, perfect for photographs and reflection.
Relax at Micondo Beach
Relax on the warm sands of Micondo Beach, where you may choose to swim before lunch. Then savor a traditional meal featuring fresh local ingredients in São João dos Angolares or a nearby village, depending on your preference and timing.
Admire Big Dog Peak
In the afternoon, if it is your first time on this route, take a short drive to admire the impressive Big Dog Peak, a striking natural rock formation rising dramatically from the landscape.
Praia Pesqueira Waterfall Adventure
If time allows, conclude your excursion at the refreshing Praia Pesqueira Waterfall. Depending on the season and rainfall, you may enjoy swimming or even jumping safely from the rocks — a memorable end to a day rich in discovery.
