Family Adventure to Angolares Waterfall
Enjoy a memorable family adventure in São Tomé with the Angolares Waterfall hike, a scenic experience through lush cocoa plantations leading to the highest waterfall on the island. This family-friendly hike combines nature, light adventure, and cultural heritage, ideal for travelers seeking discovery and fun.
Scenic Start from Roça Ponta Figo
Your guided Angolares Waterfall hike begins with meeting your guide at Roça Ponta Figo near Neves (or at a nearby hotel), followed by a 20-minute scenic drive into the mountainous interior. Along the way, the landscape gradually changes, preparing you for an immersive hike in a preserved natural environment.
Hiking Through Cocoa Plantations
The hike starts among traditional cocoa plantations, where, depending on the season, you may have the opportunity to taste fresh cocoa beans. The 45-minute ascent unfolds through dense vegetation until reaching an old bridge marking the entrance to the first historic water tunnel.
Angolares Waterfall Hike and the Seven Water Tunnels
The highlight of the Angolares Waterfall hike is the exploration of seven Portuguese-era water tunnels, an important part of São Tomé’s electricity production history.
Along the way, you may observe local fauna, including flat spiders, while one tunnel is home to bats, adding an educational and adventurous dimension to the experience.
Angolares Waterfall: The Highest on São Tomé
At the end of the first tunnel, you will encounter the impressive Angolares Waterfall, plunging from approximately 40 meters into a rocky natural basin. Hidden within a mountain alcove, this waterfall creates a striking and memorable highlight of the hike.
Picnic and Relaxation at the Water Dam
After completing the six following tunnels (a flat and easy walk in fresh waters), the hike continues to a water dam, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch (selected during checkout). Weather and conditions permitting, there is also the possibility of a refreshing swim in the cool, clear waters.
Easy Return Walk
The experience concludes with a gentle walk back along stone and dirt roads to the vehicles, ending a relaxed and rewarding family adventure.
