Explore São Tomé’s Colonial Plantations and Rich Heritage

Embark on a captivating journey along the Road of the Roças, where you will explore the famous colonial plantations of São Tomé. These heritage sites offer a glimpse into the island’s storied past and showcase stunning colonial architecture.

Please note that "roça" is pronounced "raw saa" since the 'c' has turned soft due to the cedilla.

Begin your excursion at Roça Bela Vista, an inhabited farm village featuring well-preserved colonial buildings. The charm of the colonial structures and the serene environment provide a perfect start to your adventure.

Next, visit Roça Agostinho Neto, the former largest cocoa plantation on the island. Renowned for its iconic paved avenue and historic hospital, this site offers a fascinating insight into São Tomé’s cocoa industry and colonial history.

Optionally, you can make a short stop at the Blue Lagoon for sightseeing and a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters.

Continue to Roça Rio Leça, a beautiful small-scale plantation with inhabited buildings and lush gardens.

We'll have a lunch break in the area of Neves, and then visit Roça Ponta Figo, a populous area with a charming central square. This plantation is known for its vibrant community and engaging atmosphere, making it a lively stop on your excursion.

Roça Generosa, despite losing its main building, is located up in the mountains. If you're lucky, you may see fermenting and drying cocoa beans.

Next, head to Roça Monte Forte, the headquarters of a cocoa cooperative and the island’s first agrotourism farm.

We'll conclude the journey at Roça Diogo Vaz and Roça Santa Catarina. Roça Diogo Vaz, still in operation, boasts beautifully renovated buildings and a stunning view of São Tomé peak. This operational plantation offers a dynamic blend of history and modernity.

Finally, explore the ancient buildings on the hill of Santa Catarina, where you’ll be treated to a beautiful view of the ocean. The scenic beauty and historical significance of this site provide a perfect end to your Road of the Roças excursion.

The excursions are private, and the itineraries are flexible. Don't hesitate to ask your guide!
