Explore São Tomé’s Colonial Plantations and Heritage

Discover the Road of the Roças excursion and explore the colonial plantations of São Tomé. This journey immerses you in history, architecture, cocoa culture, and the life of the communities that still inhabit these historic plantation villages.

Roça Bela Vista

Your experience begins at Roça Bela Vista, an inhabited plantation village with well-preserved colonial buildings.
(Note: “Roça” is pronounced raw-saa, due to the softened “c” with a cedilla.)

Roça Agostinho Neto

Continue to Roça Agostinho Neto, once the largest cocoa plantation in São Tomé and Príncipe. Walk along its iconic paved avenue and visit the old hospital building, learning about the island’s cocoa production past.

Optional: Stop at the Blue Lagoon to enjoy its crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Roça Rio Leça

Explore this tranquil small plantation with inhabited buildings and lush natural surroundings, perfect for photography and quiet observation.

Lunch Break in Neves

Roça Ponta Figo – Community and Plantation Village Life

Visit Roça Ponta Figo, a lively plantation village with a charming square and welcoming atmosphere, still very active and lived in.

Roça Generosa – Mountain Views and Cocoa Processing

At Roça Generosa, located in the highlands, you may have the chance to see cocoa fermentation and drying, depending on harvest season.

Roça Monte Forte

Continue to Roça Monte Forte, home to a cocoa cooperative and São Tomé’s first agrotourism farm, supporting sustainable development and local communities.

Roça Diogo Vaz & Roça Santa Catarina

The Road of the Roças excursion concludes at Roça Diogo Vaz, with beautifully restored buildings and a stunning view of São Tomé Peak.
Finally, at Roça Santa Catarina, explore ancestral structures set high above the ocean—a peaceful and scenic end to your day.
